Shopping β English for School
Some people are fond of shopping. For them, itβs a wonderful way to spend their free time, a kind of relaxation and a means of entertainment. Not for me. To tell the truth, Iβm not among those who enjoy wondering from one shop to another without a definite purpose. Queuing and carrying Β heavy bags with food homeΒ makes me tired too.
Nevertheless, people canβt live without food and clothes. Neither can I. Thatβs why I have to choose where to go and what to buy at a reasonable price.
As you know, I live in the suburb of Gomel. The social sphere of the place where I live is rather well developed. And, whatβs more,Β I live just opposite a big shopping center. I do my everyday shopping there. It doesnβt take me a lot of time to cross the yard and buy, for example, a loaf of bread or half a kilo of sausage. Everyone in the shop is polite and attentive. Unfortunately, sometimes I witness the shop assistants being really rude to customers, especially when the customers are elderly people. It makes me sad. I hope things will change for the better.
Of course, if I want to buy something special I have to go to Gomel. But as I have already said, it isnβt fun for me at all. I donβt like crowds of people around me, I dislike the smoke and noise of a city. Gomel is a beautiful place, green and clean, but shopping is not the pastime to enjoy there. (For me, of course. Iβm speaking about myself now.) Youβd better go to the park and walk there, or sit on a bench and eat an ice-cream or watch a couple of beautiful swans swimming close to the bank of the Sozh and feed them.
To sum up, Iβd like to add that nowadays, when we have to spend a fortune on the things we really need in our everyday life my dislike for shopping is constantly growing. Even the discounts some shops are offering donβt appeal to me. Today I bought a packet of tea at a lower price, Indian tea, and my children said it was tasteless. It seems I will forget the taste of real teaΒ soon . But letβs hope for the best.
Itβs time to say Β«See you Β» as far as I have to go shopping now. Though shopping, as you can see, is not my cup of tea.
This is how I see my place when I return home from Gomel

Christmas Presents
Some weeks before Christmas shops are very busy. People buy presents for their
relatives and friends. When I buy presents I always ask myself «Would he or she like
to have this thing? Will he or she like my present?» Choosing presents is a difficult
business for me. I never buy whatever comes up. I think twice and try to find reasons
before buying this or that. This year I’ve bought a saucepan for Granny. Her old one is
too small for our family. I’ve bought a new tie for Granddad. His old one isn’t trendy at
all. I’ve bought a very beautiful flower for Mum and a nice fish for Dad’s aquarium. My
little sister Jane likes watching cartoons. So I’ve bought a cassette with her favourite
ones. All these presents are from the heart.
Are these statements true or false?
1. There are a lot of people in the shops before Christmas. (T)
2. People buy presents for nearest and dearest. (T)
3. Choosing presents is a hard business for Michael. (T)
4. He buys whatever comes up. (F)
5. Michael bought a new saucepan for Mum. (F)
6. Michael bought a fish for Granddad’s aquarium. (F)
7. Michael bought a cassette with Jane’s favourite cartoons. (T)

The University was founded by scholars from another English
university, Oxford. Nobody is exactly sure why they moved to
Cambridge. One record shows it happened when two Oxford scholars were
arrested and then convicted of murdering a local woman. Other
students protested their arrest by leaving the university and going
to other towns. It was a group of these scholars that set up a
university in Cambridge.
3.
What important discoveries were made at Cambridge? The

number of shops and department stores with a wide range of goods to

2.
The author describes some department stores that are popular with
shoppers. Find this extract and read it aloud. (3
Π°Π±Π·Π°Ρ)
Some people like shopping in department stores, the most famous one
in London is ‘Harrods’, but for me, it’s not modern enough and too
expensive, the sort of place your parents shop. But just down the
road is ‘Harvey Nics’, much more up-to-date, but not cheap. The best
of all the big department stores is ‘Selfridges’ in Oxford Street,
it’s a shopper’s paradise, nice clothes, and the prices. Well I can
look, can’t I?
3.
What does John like about shopping? Because
some shops are busy, exciting, trendy, and there are lots of
bargains! If all that shopping is too tiring, you can get some
Chinese or Thai food, sit by the canal and have a drink.
4.
Why is Greenwich interesting to visit? Because
itβs a world heritage site. You can have a walk round the market
and shops, and then take in a bit of London’s history. There’s also
the park, the meridian line, and the old observatory there.

I go shopping several times per week. Nowadays there are so many types of shops β the shopping center, the hypermarket, the supermarket, the bakery, butchery and grocery.
I adore shopping centers. I usually do the shopping with my mother or with my friends. We go to the shopping centers where we can spend hours in different shops. You can buy any type of clothes there: from underwear to shoes and coat.
The supermarkets and hypermarkets are very convenient as you can buy whatever you need at once. There is no more need to go to three different shops to buy bread, meat and vegetables. Itβs all here.
But still there are those who prefer buying some goods at the specialized places. For example, they buy fresh bread at the bakery across the street, and then go to the butcherβs to buy some fresh meat, and then spend 20 minutes to get to the grocery to buy fresh fruits and vegetables.
Modern technologies allow doing the shopping without need not only to get out of the house, but even get out of bed. It concerns not only the clothing, but also the food. The delivery service is a part of almost all modern shops and that is extremely convenient. You can spend half an hour on choosing and ordering the products and then do some other things and then just receive all that you need. Isnβt that convenient?
So there are so many types of shopping. And one can choose the most preferable to him.
