Last year it made profit of 529 mln. Pounds, which is more than 10 mln aweek.

How did it all begin?

It all started105 years ago, when a young Polish immigrant, Michael Marks,had a stall in Leeds market. He didn’t have many things to sell: some cotton, a little wool, lots of buttons, and a few shoelaces. Above his stall he put the now famous notice: DON”T ASK HOW MUCH- IT”S A PENNY.

    — по заранее спланированной системе с учетом уровня подготовки и способностей восьмиклассника;

    — регулярно и планомерно;

    — промежуточные итоги, результаты постоянно контролировались, проводилась динамика достигнутого, корректировка плана и работы.

FINAL TEST

  1. A pleasant experience

  2. Friendly relationship

  3. A variety of shopping ideas

  4. Ordering products by phone

  5. Paying by credit card

  6. Shopping online

  1. Whether it’s buying something to cook for dinner, choosing some new clothes or picking up a gift for a friend’s birthday, we all have to shop. Nowadays most people are so busy that they don’t want to spend a lot of time shopping. Fortunately, there is a variety of shopping options, something to meet everyone’s needs.

  2. For some people, shopping is a pleasant experience, a chance to meet a friend and spend the day in one of the new, modem shopping centres. They don’t mind trying on lots of different clothes — it all adds to the enjoyment of the day. After a hard day’s shopping, they’ll often see a film at one of the cinemas at the shopping centre, or have dinner at one of many restaurants here.

  3. Other people prefer shopping quickly and easily from their own home by shopping online. All they have to do is search the Internet for the item they want to buy, read about it and place an order for it, using a credit card. It’s fast, easy and convenient. There’s no time wasted travelling to and from a shopping centre.

  4. Many shops also accept orders placed by phone. You can call your local supermarket, for example, and give them a list of items you want to buy. One of their staff will gather all the items you want and deliver them to your home. Of course, you may not be happy with the quality, but it does save you a lot of time.

  5. So there are many ways a busy modern person can shop. No matter which method you choose, it seems the end of the small family-owned shop cannot be far away. Even if you don’t enjoy shopping, you’d like to have a chat with your neighbourhood shopkeepers.

(3 — Not stated).

Ice Alaska is an amazing event that takes place in Fairbanks, Alaska. It brings the town to life in February and March every year. It is a wonderful event that promotes art, culture, education, international friendship and winter tourism through ice.

It was all started in 1934 by Kay Huffman and Clara Murray West. They used to organise the Fairbanks Winter Carnival, with activities such as parades and dog races. After four years, this became the Ice Carnival, and artists would carve thrones from the ice for the carnival king and queen. Each year these thrones became more complex and this was the start of the town’s ice sculpting tradition.

In 1988 the festival was revived. Teams of ice sculptors came from China and Chicago to create sculptures for Winter Carnival. An exhibition followed, and in 1990 the first competition was held. A team from France won the first prize. Today, up to 75 teams from around the world compete in Ice Alaska every year.

Visitors can watch the artists at work and see all the finished sculptures in a fantastic light display. Children can have fun, too, in the Kid’s Park, which offers a wide range of activities including rides, slides, mazes and trains. This is definitely an event that is not to be missed!
