Volcano Stories

A   Nearly 2,000 years ago, in AD 79, Mount. Vesuvius, near Naples in Italy, erupted one night. A river of burning rocks came down the sides of the mountain. A massive cloud of volcanic gas and ash covered the town of Pompeii. The hot ash caught people inside their houses, and about 20,000 of them died. The mountain erupted again in 1944, but this time nobody died.

в   One of the most powerful eruptions of a volcano in modern times was on 27th August, 1883. The volcano on the island of Krakatoa, in Indonesia, erupted with an enormous bang! Volcanic rock and dust went 55 kilometres into the sky and some of it came down again 5,300 kilometres away ten days later. People in Australia, 5,000 kilometres away, heard the explosion. The island of Krakatoa completely disappeared. The eruption created a huge wave, 36 metres high, and 36,380 people died in the water of the wave.                                                                                                                                                                                          С   Mount Saint Helens is in the state of Washington, in the north-west of the USA. It erupted suddenly on 18th May, 1980. It was a very violent eruption. In the explosion 400 metres of rock vanished from the top of the mountain into the air. How We Kept Mother’s Day

I think celebrating «Mother’s Day» once a year is a very good idea. So we decided to have a special celebration of ……..(1). We thought it a fine idea. I live in the middle of Australia, a long way from any towns or cities, so I belong to the School of the Air. Students from all over Australia belong to such school. Every day, I start at half past eight. I have two hours of radio lessons and sometimes I watch lessons on TV. After that, I have three hours of homework, then I have free time.

I don’t mind going to school in the sitting room — it’s fun! I like using the radio. I like Geography because I’m interested in learning about foreign countries and I like talking to my Geography teacher about her visits to Europe, Asia and America. I also like History lessons. Unfortunately, we don’t have sport lessons.

I am Magnus. I go to Green Street School in Portland, the USA. We get to school by bus.

Our school is quite big. There are about 1,500 students. I don’t mind going to school. The lessons aren’t very difficult for me. Our lessons start at half past eight. We usually have five or six 45-minute lessons. I am interested in science and computer studies. I usually get good grades in these subjects and I don’t mind having tests in English and Literature.

I like my school. I am good at sport. I like playing ball games, especially baseball, football and basketball. We don’t have uniform in our school and we don’t study foreign languages. Some schools in Portland teach Spanish and German. I would like to study German.

I usually come home after 3 p.m. and go to the local stadium to play baseball with my friends.

Aesop lived in Greece more than two thousand years ago. He was the servant of a rich man. He made up little stories about man and animals and told them to his friends. Each story had a moral.

Everybody liked hearing the stories he told. A little story with a moral is called a fable. Mothers and fathers told Aesop’s stories to their children. Travelers heard the fables in Greece and told them in other countries.

From the 15th century Aesop’s fables were translated into French, English and German. In Russia, they were translated during the time of Peter the Great.

Aesop became famous all over the world and his fables are still told today they draw people’s attention to what is bad and help people become better.

Baby Hal

We use computers every day, for lots of different things. Computers build things, they help us to communicate and solve problems. Powerful supercomputers can do 100 trillion calculations per second. But now computers can do more than calculate; they can learn from their experience too. IBM’s computer Deep Blue beat the world champion chess player Gary Kasparov. Its big advantage is that it doesn’t get tired, and it never forgets a move.

Now those computers can learn from experience, the next stage is a computer that can think for itself.

A company called Artificial Intelligence (AL) is developing a new computer program. The program is in a computer called Baby Hal. It helps Baby Hal learn a language in the same way humans do. Hal is the name of the intelligent computer in the science fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey. That computer was dangerous and hurt people, but Baby Hal is not a dangerous computer. Anat Treister-Goren is teaching Baby Hal to learn a language in the same way that humans learn from their mothers.

Anat is very proud of Hal. She says ‘Well done’, when Hal solves a problem and she corrects its wrong answers on the computer keyboard. Baby Hal enjoys learning about the world by playing games and listening to stories just like a child. Hal’s language level is the same as an 18-month-old baby, but its vocabulary is growing fast, and it’s making words into sentences.

Computers are part of our lives. They give us information, help us at work, and do the shopping. But powerful machines like Baby Hal, that can think for themselves, need good parents. We don’t want dangerous computers that make the wrong decisions, like Hal in the film 2001.

An American farmer wanted to make an air trip. There was an airport close to his farm. So one morning he came there to ask if he could make an air trip.
