Time – 20 min

After over twenty years of confusing both the Irish and tourists by having distances in kilometres and speed limits in miles per hour, Ireland has just become fully metric. However, there is some confusion over the sixty thousand new speed signs – and not only on the part of drivers. For example, one speed sign gave an 80kmh (50mph) speed limit down a dead-end street while another had a limit of 100kph(62 mph) outside a primary school.

There was a nation-wide publicity campaign, including newspaper and television advertisements and brochures posted to every house, before the new signs were introduced. The government believes this will be enough to prevent drivers misunderstanding the new ‘120’ speed limits and trying to imitate Michael Schumacher on the motorways. Northern Ireland’s transport department has also launched a campaign encouraging drivers to be extremely careful when they cross the border.

The Irish police expect a certain amount of confusion, mistakes and high speeds. In spite of this, they have no intention of being lenient and giving drivers a period of time in which to get used to the new signs. Ignorance is not an excuse and any driver who exceeds the speed limits will suffer the consequences. Unfortunately for the police, half their instruments for measuring speed still register them in miles per hour and they have to convert from miles to kilometres, which makes it a little complicated for them.

When Ireland first converted distances to kilometres in 1983, motorists never quite knew where they were because any new signs were in kilometres while the old ones still reported the distance in miles. However, schools have been teaching the metric system for thirty years and the Irish government is ready to change to be in line with the rest of Europe.

The UK remains the only European country using the imperial system on its roads. A spokesman for the department of Transport stated that it was improbable that Britain would change in the near future. Although the Irish have replaced one system for the purpose of greater European harmony, they are still left with another British legacy – they drive on the left.

One summer day, when most of my friends were on holidays in some hot countries, I was wandering around the town. It was rather hot. I felt exhausted after 2-hour walk. In the park I found a bench and sat down to have a rest. I felt my eyes getting sleepy, so, I couldn’t resist any more, and finally fell asleep …

Father: Good morning, Jamie. You’re up very early this morning – unusual for you on a Saturday.

Jamie: Morning, Dad. Well, I’m up for a good reason.

Father: Oh, what’s that then?

Jamie: My school is having a ‘bottle drive’.

Father: Sorry?

Jamie: A bottle drive. All the students at the school – well, at least all the older students – are going to go around the neighbourhood and ask people if they want to donate any old bottles they have.

Father: Why? So they won’t just throw them away?

Jamie: Yes, that’s one reason. Some people don’t take time to recycle and they just throw their old bottles in the bin. That’s not a good thing because glass takes such a lot of time to break down and the bottles just lie there in the landfill sites.

Father: Well, that means that a bottle drive is a great way to help out the Earth .And we know how important that is.

Jamie: True. But there is another reason why we’re going door-to-door asking for bottles.

Father: Oh?

Jamie: Yes. Some of the bottles are refundable and we’re going to take those ones to the recycling centre and get the deposit back on them.

Father: Really? What are you going to do with the money?

Jamie: We’re not sure yet. Some of the children thought it would be a good idea to use it to buy some saplings. You know, young trees, to plant in the school grounds.

Father: Yes, that sounds like a good idea.

Jamie: Some other students want to use the money to get some leaflets about recycling printed up. They thought that we could pass them out to local residents.

Father: Hmmm, I think I’d go with that suggestion. It’s a brilliant way to educate people about the importance of recycling. Maybe the leaflets would persuade them to get more involved in recycling.

Jamie: Actually, I think you’ve got something there. I’ll let the students in my class know what your opinion is.

Father: So, I hope you have a good day. Let’s hope people are generous. Here’s a little donation to get you started.

Jamie: Hey, thanks, Dad!

On April 26 1986, one of history’s worst nuclear accidents occurred at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power plant in the Ukraine (the former Soviet Union). At 1:23 AM, technicians at the Chernobyl plant allowed the power in the fourth reactor ( reactor -4) to fall to low levels as part of a controlled experiment, which went terribly wrong. The reactor overheated and caused a meltdown of the core. This resulted in an explosive force of steam, which blew off the lid of the reactor. Large amounts of radioactive material were released into the atmosphere. The reactor-4 explosions released more radioactivity than the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II. Most of the discharged material was deposited close by as dust and debris, but wind carried the lighter radioactive material overthe Ukraine, Belarus, Russia and parts of Europe.

The operators’ over-confident decision-making, a flaw in the design of the reactor, and inadequate safety systems are believed to be the major factors that caused the Chernobyl disaster.

Many people were affected by this catastrophe. The accident caused 31 immediate deaths that were mainly the result of exposure to radiation. The main casualties were among those who fought the fires caused by the explosion. Once the fires were extinguished, a liquidating crew of around 200,000 people was initially employed to clean up the site. Later the number swelled to 600,000. This crew was exposed to high doses of radiation, which might affect their health in the long run.

Many children in the surrounding areas developed thyroid cancer due to the radiation emitted. Many Ukrainians, Russians and Belarussians were evacuated and later given new homes in a different area.

Today reactor-4 is buried in a cement tomb which was quickly built in order to allow the other reactors at the power station to continue working. However, this shelter is not strong and will not last and there are plants to replace it. Many people have suffered in some way as a result of the Chernobyl disaster and millions of dollars are still being spent today to contain reactor-4 and assure that no further radiation leakage occurs.

3. Read the text and choose the appropriate answer.

In some parts of the world, air pollution is a big problem. Pollution is caused by burning fuel in vehicles and buildings. The smoke from burning fuel has poisonous gases and dust that make the air dirty. Why else is pollution bad? The dirty air hurts people, causing more colds, coughs and diseases of the heart and lungs. It also harms plants and animals and makes clothing and buildings dirty.

Which is true to the text? (only one variant is right)

A) Air pollution is not much of a problem.

B) Smoke carries poisonous gases.

C) Air pollution helps people stay healthy.

D) Burning fuel comes from dust.

E) Dirty buildings cause pollution.

4. Reading: read the text and answer the question. What are the reasons of pollution?

Environmental pollution is the addition of any substance or form of energy (e.g., heat, sound, radioactivity) to the environment at a rate faster than the environment can accommodate it by dispersion, breakdown, recycling, or storage in some harmless form.

Pollution of the natural environment is a largely unintended and unwanted consequence of human activities in manufacturing, transportation, agriculture, and waste disposal. High levels of pollution are largely a consequence of industrialization, urbanization, and the rapid increase of human populations in modern times.

Pollutants commonly are classified according to the part of the environment primarily affected by them: either the air, water, or land. Subgroupings depend on characteristics of the pollutants themselves: chemical, physical, thermal, and others. Many pollutants affect more than one resource.

A pollutant need not be harmful in itself. Carbon dioxide, for example, is a normal component of the atmosphere and a by-product of respiration that is found in all animal tissues; yet in a concentrated form it can kill animals. Human sewage can be a useful fertilizer, but when concentrated too highly it becomes a serious pollutant, menacing health and causing the depletion of oxygen in bodies of water. By contrast, radioactivity in any quantity is harmful to life, despite the fact that it occurs normally in the environment as so-called background radiation.

Exercise 4/1. Cross out the kinds of pollution which are not mentioned in the text.

  1. noise pollution air pollution water pollution
  2. land pollution chemical pollution
  3. dust pollution thermal pollution light pollution
  4. nuclear pollution oil pollution

Вариант 1.

  1. Read the text.

William Shakespeare.

Nowadays people seem to read newspapers mostly. Many people are fond of reading detective stories or spy thrillers. I myself prefer books about politics, history.

I enjoy reading books by such English writers as Charles Dickens, Walter Scott. My favorite writer is William Shakespeare, one of the outstanding personalities in the world literature.

William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon not far from London. His father, John Shakespeare , came to Stratford from a village and opened a shop there. He never became a rich man but at one time he was an important official in the city. William Shakespeare lived in Stratford until he was twenty-one. He got married and had three children. At the age of 21 William left Stratford for London to join a company of actors. William Shakespeare lived and worked in London for 25 years.

In all William Shakespeare wrote 37 plays, 2 long poems, a sonnet cycle of 155 small pieces.

William Shakespeare had a natural gift for comedy. In his comedies William Shakespeare describes the adventures of young men and women, their love, friendship, happiness.

In England and other countries it is the highest honor for an actor to be invited to play in a comedy or tragedy by William Shakespeare. In the last 35 years all the plays by William Shakespeare have been filmed. Since 1879 Shakespeare’s Festival has been held every year at Stratford-upon-Avon.

Shape it up: tips you can follow for a healthier campus diet

Rushing up and down the streets, I often have days when I wonder how I will find the time to eat. This is when it becomes easy for students to turn to fast food. Once you stop living close by or have awkward time gaps between classes, fast food is available at almost every on-campus eatery.
There’s no doubt that the university tries to make healthier food readily available. Some cafes have organic foods ready to go and Greenhouse allows students to make almost any kind of fresh salad they can think of. But I have to wonder, why is there so much fast food available? For many students, it’s difficult to choose an expensive salad from Greenhouse over a meal from Taco Bell.
To solve the problem of finding healthy food on campus without having to eat salad daily, I do three things: take advantage of meal options I previously disregarded, completely ignore any fast food place and get creative in the dining halls.
First, I take advantage of meal options I had previously disregarded at on campus restaurants. Being both a vegetarian and interested in a fair-trade diet has made it somewhat challenging to arrange an eating plan while living on campus. With limited options, food gets old fast. I looked closely at menus to see what options I overlooked. On campus, I eat oatmeal and fresh fruit instead of getting smoothies. I try the soup at Greenhouse instead of salad. If I have time in the morning I use an extra swipe and pack a lunch. By including this, I now have something new to eat each day, and I can go an entire school week without repeating a lunch.
As I create a pattern of eateries to maintain a healthy diet without losing interest in the food, it is clear I cannot include every on-campus restaurant in my plan.
This is where my second solution comes in. I have learned to completely ignore fast food. If I linger in front of Panda Express or Sbarro too long, temptation takes over. I started ignoring these places in the middle of fall quarter, and now I can walk by them without a thought. The only way I know to accomplish this is willpower. Of course, that does not mean in any way that you should never allow yourself the occasional visit to these restaurants. Everyone deserves a treat sometimes. I know I can never give up animal-style fries completely.
Finally, I have learned to get creative in dining halls. This can’t easily be done outside a dining hall, so it isn’t exactly an «on-the-go» solution to eating on campus. Just the same, it can help make meals less boring. I often take a veggie patty and make a wrap out of it, and I use the salad bar to throw on any other toppings I want. I use the microwave to heat up whatever I want in it. If you are a meat lover, you can put the bacon bits from the salad bar or slice a grilled chicken breast to put in soup or pasta.
When living on a college campus, it can be difficult to find a way to eat what you like and what’s good for you while trying to avoid a repetitive diet. There are a limited number of options available and the dominance of fast food can be hard to ignore. But if you try out as many places as you can, use willpower and turn on your creativity, you can certainly design your own healthy meal plan that won’t feel as if you eat the same thing every day.

7. According to the author students turn to fast food when …

1) their schedule is well adjusted.
2) they are short of time.
3) they live close to the campus.
4) they have no willpower.

8. What does the author think about eating opportunities on campus?

1) She believes they need to provide more organic food.
2) She thinks they do a great job providing salads at a reasonable price.
3) She can’t understand why they offer so many fast food choices.
4) She thinks that meals from Taco Bell are too expensive.

9. What is the author’s method of maintaining a healthy diet?

1) Carefully choosing an on-campus restaurant.
2) Changing a restaurant daily.
3) Eating less.
4) Trying new dishes on the menu.

10. What is NOT characteristic of the author’s eating habits?

1) She avoids eating meat.
2) She misses lunches.
3) She studies the menus attentively.
4) She tries to vary the food she eats.

11. What is, according to the author, the best way to stop eating fast food?

1) Visit fast food restaurants not more than once a year.
2) To replace it with the animal-style fries.
3) Not to walk near fast food restaurants.
4) To stick to the decision not to eat it.

12. What does «it» in paragraph 7 refer to («Just the same, it can help … «)?

1) Finding a perfect solution to eating on campus.
2) Cooking your own meals.
3) Creativity in a dining hall.
4) Eating outside of dining halls.

13. What is the purpose of the article?

1) To give advice on eating healthy food on campus.
2) To convince the reader that eating the same food every day is unhealthy.
3) To classify on-campus eateries.
4) To prove that daily consumption of fast food is harmful.
