5. Family Problems | |
Family is an essential part of every person’s life and of our society. Family is a little world with its own values and priorities. Close families share dreams, ideas, hopes and even possessions, and it’s a good side of being a family. However, as usual, every good thing can have its drawbacks. Same with families: they can often have different types of problems. One of the most frequent and common problems is the misunderstanding between parents and children, due to the difference of generations. This problem is especially acute with teenagers, who want to have more freedom, to express their self-identity in a way they want to. They can also gradually develop different values and interests which conflict with their parents. During this complicated periods, parents should rather try to understand their children, find the right approach to them, or find the ways to solve the conflicts. It’s important to talk about the family problems openly to solve them. There are also many problems in modern young families, shortage of money, bad conditions of living and else. Family conflicts often occur because of change of interests. To fix such kind of problems families should try to spend more time together. Another variety of problems occurs in big families, between brothers and sisters. They often quarrel or treat each other badly. They can also get jealous about parents’ attention. From one hand, nobody wants to share and many people prefer they had more privacy and freedom. From the other hand, life without siblings would be boring. There are many other problems which can take place in any family, but when regarded with love, respect and understanding, every problem can be decided. |
Seasons and weather’
There are four seasons in a year: spring, summer, autumn and winter.
Spring is the time of hope and happiness. Nature is awakening of life again. Trees are bursting in leaf, flowers are breaking into blossom. Spring is a busy season for gardeners who have much to do in their orchards. Rainy and warm weather in spring is good.
Summer is the hottest season of all. It is a time of holidays and vacation. People go to the seaside to lie in the sun, to swim in the sea and come back to their work and studies, healthy and full of vitality. In summer at times the heat is almost unbearable. But sometimes there are heavy thunder-storms in summer.
Autumn is the time of harvest. In September the weather is fine. October and November are rainy. The sky is most overcast with low and heavy clouds. In October the days are growing rapidly shorter and the sun rays lose their warmth. In November almost all trees have cast off their leaves and stand there bare and lonely. A short spell of warm pleasant weather in autumn is called Indian Summer.
Winter is the coldest season of all. In winter though the sun shines, its rays bring little warmth. Nights are long and days are short in winter. In winter the weather is nasty when the wind blows violently and the falling snow strikes the face. Winter is the time for skiing, skating, hockey-playing. On a fine winter day snow is falling in large flakes, covering the ground. The streets and parks are all in white. It’s very nice to be in the open air. Yet nobody is sorry when winter is over.
12 My First Experience As A Teacher
My first experience as a teacher was a very challenging and exciting. It was a practice from the college. When I wore my formal This made me very proud of myself . I went to …..
Upon reaching the school I went straight to the school principal. She was very happy to see me, a former student as a teacher-probationer in the school.
As the days progressed I was feeling more comfortable with both teachers and students. I was able to see some of the behaviour of the students towards teachers and felt respected. My associate teachers also gave me some of their classes to teach. I felt very nervous at first but then I controlled it and moved on teaching. My associate teacher helped me explain the students some of the concepts which I was not very clear on.
Moreover, I sometimes faced difficulties in controlling the classes as it was hard to explain student on concepts which are apart from my discipline. As days passed by I became more confident and was able to interact well with them.
To conclude my essay I can say that module one had a lot of experience for me as a teacher. I have learnt a lot of things about the school and the amount of work the teachers need to do in order to carry out a successful class.
21.The role of teacher in modern society
The world changes day by day and there is no doubt that the modern society is not the same with an ancient one. For example, education system has changed completly — nowdays being teacher does not mean only being a helper in difficult process of getting education; it means being creative and highly talented «guide», which accompanies a student in all way of studying. Are these changes positive or negative?
In my opinion, contemporary teachers should pay more attention to new methods of teaching, what will make studying more enjoyable. First of all, in conditions, when people are surronded by great number of information, school or university program can be remembered only by association; that is why lessons must be expressive and remarkable. Secondly, today humanity has the accsess to immence resourse, such as books, science reserches and teacher`s role, which provide student with it, is not actual today.
However, some people believe that a classic teacher is more reliable, becouse new methods of education can be untested yet. They also consider that instead of imagining something new, it is better to make knowlage deeper for both students and teachers.
I am afraid they are not right, because education system cannot stay in one level. Moreover, in modern society depth of knowlage does not play the mainest role; it is more important to be flexible.
In conclusion I strongly believe that the way of getting education is very individual and choice depends on our preferences.

Mass Media
Television, also called is one of the most important mass media. People with a television set can sit at home and can see and learn about people, animals, and things in faraway lands. Million of viewers around the world can watch sports events and other events of worldwide interest.
TV brings its viewers a steady stream of programmes that are designed to give information and to entertain. The programmes include sports events, variety shows, quiz shows, feature films, cartoons, fictional serials called soap operas, etc.
There are two main kinds of television stations: public stations and commercial stations. Public television stations are supported by the government. They usually broadcast more educational programmes and programmes on cultural subjects.
Commercial television stations are run by private companies. They sell advertising time to pay for their operating costs and to make a profit for the companies that run the stations.
People can also subscribe to cable television system. Viewers pay a fee for this service. We may speak about different advantages and drawbacks of television but almost every home has at least one TV set. On average, a TV set is in use for about 7 hours each day. Thus, television is the most effective means of mass communication known to mankind. It has become the people’s eyes and ears on the world.
Radio is also one of the most important mass media. Radio broadcasts news, discussions, interviews, description of sport events, drama, religious programmes, music, and advertising.
In all countries, programmes primarily provide information and entertainment. Programmes that provide information include news and current affairs, live broadcasts of sports events, weather forecasts, talk shows. Music is a popular kind of radio entertainment. Most music stations specialize in one kind of music, such as pop, classical, jazz or folk music. Some stations broadcast several kinds of music. A major reason for the widespread use of radios is their portability. People listen to the radios almost everywhere — at home, in parks, at beaches and picnics, while driving a car, and even while walking along the street.
When Charles Babbage, a professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University, invented the first calculating machine in 1812 he couldn’t imagine the situation we find ourselves in today. Nearly everything we do in the world is helped, or even controlled by computers, the complicated descendants of his simple machine. Computers are used more and more often in the world today, for the simple reason that they are far more efficient than human beings. They have much better memories and they can store much information. No man alive can do 500000 sums in one second, but a computer can. In fact, computers can do many of the things we do, but faster and better. They can predict weather, and ever play chess, write poetry or compose music.
Computers at the school
Information science with the ideas and message of processing and storing information is of great importance today. That’s why computer technology must be told in secondary school. The new subject “basic information science”, and “computing machine” was introduced for the senior forms at schools. The pupils teach computers to investigate school problems. Contact with the machine increases the interest in learning, makes them more serious about studying new subject. School computers are used not only for studying information science, but also examinations purposes. Young people who finish the school must be trained to operate computers.
Russian Holidays and Traditions
Every country has customs and traditions. I want to tell you about some holidays and traditions of my country.
Russians really love holidays. We usually celebrate them with a lot of food, presents and in big companies of relatives and friends.
There are three types of holidays in Russia. They are family holidays, state holidays and religious holidays.
Let me tell you about family holidays first. They include birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and others. Each family has its own traditions of celebrating this or that holiday. For example, my family celebrates my birthday for two days. On the first day I celebrate it with my parents, grandparents, my uncle and aunt. The second day of celebration is only for my close friends. They usually come in a big group with a lot of presents. I like my birthday very much.
State or public holidays in Russia include Constitution Day, New Year’s Day, the International Women’s Day, May Day, Victory Day and Russia Day. During these holidays, people do not work. They spend time with their families and friends or go to the centre of big cities to celebrate there. Banks, companies and some shops do not work on these days either.
New Year’s Day is the major holiday in Russia. We put up a New Year tree and decorate it with colourful toys and glass balls. The main fir-tree of the country is put up in the State Kremlin Palace. Small fir trees are put up in shop windows, in streets and squares, even on roofs of buildings. A lot of people like buying natural fir trees, others prefer plastic ones. Children like the holiday a lot. They can stay up late and then get their presents. At ten minutes to midnight on the 31-st of December families gather in front of the TV-set and watch the president making his traditional speech. After the clock on the main tower of the Kremlin strikes midnight, everybody says Happy New Year and drinks champagne. After that the time for presents comes. Russian children believe that Father Frost brings presents. After all the presents are given out, Russians have fun, drink, eat, and play games all night long.
Victory Day is a very important holiday for Russian history. On this day we remember those who protected our country from the German invaders during World War II. A great parade is held on this day in Red Square. Numerous war and patriotic films are shown on television. On this day people congratulate veterans and give them flowers.
The so-called religious holidays include Christmas, Easter and others. There is also a pagan holiday — Shrovetide or Pancake Day. These holidays are not state, so people usually work and study on these days. At Shrovetide, people see spring in, eat pancakes and burn a scarecrow, which symbolizes winter.
Russian Christmas is celebrated on the 7-th of January, but there is no exact date for Easter, it is different every year.
Nowadays foreign celebrations are becoming more and more popular in Russia. They are Halloween and St. Valentine’s Day. On Halloween Day some clubs organize parties and masquerades. St. «Valentine’s Day is mostly popular with young people. They usually buy presents for their girlfriends and boyfriends such as chocolate and sweets and make greeting cards in the shape of a heart.
I like Russian holidays and look forward to celebrating each of them!
10.Education in Great Britain: Higher Education
There is a considerable choice of post-school education in Britain. In addition to universities, there are also polytechnics and a series of different types of assisted colleges, such as colleges of technology, art, etc., which tend to provide more work-orientated courses than universities.
Some of these courses are part-time, with the students being released by their employers for one day a week or longer periods.
Virtually all students on full-time courses receive grants or loans from the Government which cover their tuition fees and everyday expenses (accommodation, food, books, etc.).
Universities in Britain enjoy complete academic freedom, choosing their own staff and deciding which students to admit, what and how to teach, and which degrees to award (first degrees are called Bachelor degrees). They are mainly government-funded, except for the totally independent University of Buckingham.
There are about 180 higher educational establishments in the UK. After three years at a university or college of higher education they may receive the Bachelor’s degree; getting the Master’s degree will take another 2 or 3 years. After that, a graduate can take postgraduate courses to Master of Philosophy or Doctor of Philosophy. Students may receive grants and loans from their Local Educational Authorities to help pay for books, accommodation, transport and food. However, most students should pay these loans back after they get a job. Most students in Great Britain live away from home, in flats or halls of residence. To pay for education, many students have to work in the evening and during their summer vacations.
University life is considered an experience. The social life at universities and colleges is usually excellent, with a lot of clubs, parties and concerts.
Nowadays, young people (boys and girls) do not know what to do (literally). Some come straight from school around the corner, and smoke and drink, while others — on the street walking from morning till night, only a few attend various clubs and sections.
If you walk down the street at about 21:00, although there before, you see young girls who are waiting until they pay attention. Often, after such appeals attention from their parents have problems: where to now and how to save her daughter: she was 15-17 (adolescent), but she is already pregnant. Only from their mistakes, these girls understand what they did.
Boys are usually more harmful habits, alcohol and smoking. As we know from biology lessons, alcohol and smoking are not negatively affect the individual organs of the body, but on the whole body. Since teenagers are more biological development, then there are various problems with the development and maturation.
Now very popular disco. This is good — kids are dancing, relaxing, but if it was just a vacation! In almost every entertainment club can not do without drugs. Adolescents suggest: «Try — once it’s nothing.» But this one time becomes generally not once, but in life. Only seniors offer not only due to the fact that they do good — were treated, and they just need something to live. So look: impressionable, curious teenager — you can give. Therefore, it is almost impossible to get rid of drug addiction, fraud in the world. A drug more harm not only themselves, but usually they can not control themselves while under the influence of the drug. There is a large number of assaults on minors, theft, murder, etc.
Cinema plays an important role in the life of any society. The cinema has become part of the modern way of life. There is no denying the fact that the cinema is an excellent vehicle of culture. Its possibilities are unlimited. In the earliest years of the cinema its power to show contemporary events was recognized and appreciated. More than anything else this unique quality secured popularity for the film as a new form of instruction and entertainment. That’s why the cinema is considered to be one of the best ways of spending their leisure time.
There are a lot of different kinds of films: feature films, theatrical films, horror films, thriller films, popular science films, travelogues, mystery films, documentaries, animated cartoon films. Besides, the films may be color or black and white, full-length or short, sound or silent, dubbed in mother tongue, three-dimensional or wide-screen.
We can see films either in the cinema or on the TV. As I am often short of time, I have practically no time for going to the cinema. For this reason I see films on television more frequently. But sometimes I manage to go to the cinema. I prefer feature films and amusing comedies. It’s a pity the life is so difficult nowadays and I want to relax a little, sometimes even to laugh. But at the same time I am fond of true-to-life films describing the life of the ordinary people, their feelings and problems. Such films move me deeply, they arouse the feelings of sympathy or hatred for the heroes. As a rule such films leave a deep and lasting impression upon me.
A modern cinema program contains a newsreel which shows us pictures of important recent developments. It is usually shown before a feature film and it’s often worth seeing. Sometimes they show animated cartoon film at seeing which the audience is in a state of excitement from the beginning to the end. Especially I like Walt Disney’s cartoons “Duck Tales”, or “Vinnie-the-Pooh’s Adventures”. In my opinion the animated cartoon films are popular both with children and adults.
Showing the educational films is arranged mainly for schoolchildren and students.
In Great Britain and the USA the cinemas (“movies” as they often call them) sell more than one billion tickets a year. Movies are also shown on television and can be rented or purchased as a DVD-recorder. People in these countries are equipped with video recorders in their majority. Although people once feared that television would ruin movie industry, movie popularity has soared in recent years in these countries. Attending movies is a relatively inexpensive leisure time activity that is very popular.

Task 3. Sample Answer
Task 3. Imagine that these are photos from your photo album. Choose one photo to present to your friend. You will have to start speaking in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2 minutes (12–15 sentences). In your talk remember to speak about:
∙ where and when the photo was taken
∙ what/who is in the photo
∙ what is happening
∙ why you keep the photo in your album
∙ why you decided to show the picture to your friend
You have to talk continuously, starting with: «I’ve chosen photo number … «
Фраза «I’ve chosen photo number …
You know that I keep photos of my school life in my album. I have lots of them. This one shows how we celebrated the Day of our Motherland Defender.
It was taken on the eve of the 23rd of February last year. The students gathered in the assembly hall. You can see that the walls are decorated with posters. We are waiting for the concert to start. You can hardly see any faces because the students are looking at the posters trying to decide which of them is the best one. My friends and I made the poster which is on the left. We are all wearing our school uniforms. The general atmosphere in the picture is positive. The reason I keep this photo is because I like comparing decorations that we make for celebrating different holidays at school.
I decided to show you this photo because you have never been in my school. Why don’t we go to the concert together next time?
Looking through photo albums is a pleasant thing.
- at the top
- at the bottom
- in the background
- in the foreground
- in the middle
- on the left
- on the right
- I’d like you to see the photo that was taken last_____________ / _________ years ago.
- I remember that day very well.

- I think we could do something like that here in Moscow.
- I can’t wait to go there again. Would you like to keep my company?
- I wish you were there with me.
Помните об использовании средств логической связи (and, but, too, then, so, that’s why, nevertheless etc).
